Our Story

It all started with My Great Grandfather, Louis Shoultz, arriving in the early 1900’s from Michigan. He traveled by Train on a long journey across the mountains for a visit to family at the farm next door. Guemes island was known in the 1800’s as a land of paradise . The temperature never went below zero. You could grow fruits, vegetables, and farm the land as the soil was fertile. At the time there was a great lumber industry on the island and was very prosperous. Louis quickly fell in love with the island. he took roots and Married his bride in 1917. He was a camp Logger and continued his life of logging, farming, and delivering Coal by horse and wagon. he was full of pride in the farm he settled. He loved his Clydesdale workhorses very much and I heard many times about how he preferred the horses over a vehicle, despite my grandfather trying to get him to drive a car instead. He Raised 4 girls and 1 Boy. One being my Grandfather, Marvin Shoultz, he was born on this island and raised here. He took on the family farm legacy with My beautiful grandmother, Alice. My grandfather talked about as a child he grew strawberries in the field out front and that was all he cared about was the strawberries as a boy. Later in life, They raised numerous beef cattle through the years and won awards for their herd in the 1990’s.

My grandmother had the most beautiful and noted vegetable garden on the island. She shared her vegetables with friends when they stopped by and made gigantic meals with the food she grew. she had swarms of hummingbirds until they left for winter. We now have the farm’s garden is certified as a wildlife habitat in her name (2020) . as kids, my brothers and I picked the corn from the field and sold out of the old green Ford on the weekends. We canned or froze vegetables and fruit with my grandma to provide for the winters. My grandparents were loved by many and Worked hard their whole lives on the farm to the ages of 88 and 93. We proudly continue the family tradition and are very grateful to our ancestors for allowing this to be possible.
